Microsoft Corp., weary of being cast as a stodgy oldster by Apple Inc.'s advertising, is turning for help to Jerry Seinfeld. The software giant's new $300 million advertising campaign, devised by a newly hired ad agency, has been closely guarded. But Seinfeld will be one of the key celebrity pitchmen, say people close to the situation.

While the Beta 2 release of its next browser is still a few days away, Microsoft on Monday unveiled a few of the privacy-related features that will grace Internet Explorer (IE) 8. Due in final form by the end of the year or early 2009, IE 9 will build off of the previous release, IE 7, and greatly expand on the product's security and functionality.

Windows is one product that is not lacking in Nemesis candidates. From Apple's Mac OS X to the open source Linux, to RIA cloud-based operating systems, potential Microsoft Windows killers are advertised in a variety of scenarios incongruent with reality. Microsoft's own non-Windows platforms Singularity and Midori are the latest additions to the list of items.

Microsoft Corp. re-released one of its Aug. 11 security updates yesterday, explaining that it had posted an incomplete version to its own download center last week. Users who manually downloaded MS08-051 since Aug. 12 to patch Office 2003 should obtain the second version as soon as possible, Microsoft said.

Microsoft is a little like the General Motors of technology. The software giant is, of course, much more successful, financially and in market share, than the troubled auto maker. But, as at GM, Microsoft's very size — over 90,000 employees — and its bureaucratic structure often make the company seem more stolid and less innovative than smaller, nimbler rivals like Google and Apple.

Microsoft is to pay comedian Jerry Seinfeld $10 million to star in a $300-million advertising campaign for its Windows Vista operating system. The campaign, which is one of the largest ever undertaken by the software giant, is aimed at establishing a cachet for the computer operating system and will feature Seinfeld along with Microsoft chairman Bill Gates.

Microsoft has officially launched Photosynth, a truly impressive new application that takes a collection of regular photographs, analyzes them for similarities, and then reconstructs the scene in a 3D environment that can be smoothly navigated by other users. Microsoft Live Labs developed the technology in tandem with researchers at the University of Washington over the past two years.

Consequently in something of a groundbreaking move for the company Mozilla has revealed it will be promoting/pushing Firefox 3 (version 3.0.1, to be precise).

Apple on Tuesday issued what appeared to be a minor update to its iPhone 3G smart phone, noting in its terse support documentation only that the release "fixes bugs." But the size of the iPhone 2.0.2 update, as it's called--a massive 250 MB--belied Apple's attempts at passing this off as a minor update.

Struggling smart phone pioneer Palm on Wednesday announced the latest device in its Treo product line, a Treo Pro model that runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional instead of the company's own Palm OS. The Treo Pro will ship this fall and, unlike most smart phones, will not be tied to a specific wireless carrier.

At the Search Engines Strategies Conference and Expo in San Jose this week, Microsoft outlined its plans to compete with Google in Web search. Those plans presumably have changed a lot this year, given Microsoft's on-again, off-again romance with Yahoo!, with which Microsoft had hoped to form an alliance to take on Google together.

Microsoft said on Monday in the US that the server version of Windows 7 would not be a major release and will bear the name Windows Server 2008 R2. In the past, Microsoft has used R2 monikers to signify a product with a few new features, as opposed to major changes to a product.
