Microsoft's launch Sunday of new online software is being widely seen as a desperate, defensive measure against Google, IBM, OpenOffice and other Web 2.0 challengers to its Office franchise. But the numbers show Office is stronger than ever -- what's really going on? To recap, Microsoft over the weekend unveiled Office Live Workspace, Microsoft Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, and a host of other Web-based productivity and collaboration tools. The Live SaaS products are aimed at consumers while the Online offerings are meant for enterprise use. Read the rest of this entry »

The Extras pack includes a number of tools and utilities designed to make the operating system more secure and user friendly. After a delay of several weeks, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has shipped a free add-on pack for buyers of its pricey Windows Vista Ultimate operating system -- utilities the company hopes will help reverse flagging interest in the software shown by some consumers and PC makers. The Extras pack, made available Wednesday, includes a number of tools and utilities designed to make the operating system more secure and user friendly. Among them are a poker game called Windows Hold 'Em and a tool that makes it easier for users to employ Vista's BitLocker security system. Read the rest of this entry »

The Release Candidate of Windows Server 2008 will include the beta code for Microsoft's much-anticipated virtualization technology. Is that a good idea? When the production version of Windows Server 2008 (WS08) ships -- the official launch is planned for February 27, 2008 -- it will include beta software code. Microsoft announced that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) will include the beta of Windows Server virtualization (WSv) within the release version of Windows Server 2008, its updated flagship server operating system. Why is Microsoft taking the drastic step of including beta code with the release of an otherwise finished product? According to Arun Jayendran, senior product manager for Windows Server virtualization, it's because customers are so interested in the new WSv. Read the rest of this entry »

Recently, was written about a wonderful Windows XP repair utility called Dial-a-fix, which I used to repair a serious Windows Update problem on a client's system. For those of you just tuning in, the system had over 70 updates waiting in the wings that simply wouldn't install after I ran a repair installation of Windows XP. Dial-a-fix solved the problem in mere moments, putting Windows Update back to work installing vital security patches and updates. I was happy, but I wondered exactly what had gone wrong with Windows Update... Read the rest of this entry »

Apple Inc. kicked off the month in which it plans to launch its new Mac OS X 10.5, "Leopard," OS by reminding users that the beta license for Boot Camp -- the utility that runs Windows XP or Vista on an Intel Mac -- will expire as soon as the new operating system ships. The news was no secret: Apple had spelled it out on the Boot Camp download page and in the EULA (end user license agreement) included with the beta and posted on the Apple site. "The term of this License...will terminate automatically without notice from Apple upon the next commercial release of the Apple Software, or December 31, 2007, whichever occurs first," the EULA states. Microsoft is expected to announce a free product called Office Live Workspaces for accessing and sharing documents online, which will enter testing "shortly," perhaps later this year. The software is expected to allow the vendor an offering to make its "software-plus-services" strategy real to the average Joe. Office Live Workspace let people can store, share, and collaborate on Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents online and share their desktop with one another. "People are e-mailing documents all the time," said Eric Gilmore, a Microsoft senior product manager for Microsoft Office. "That's an inefficient way to do things when you want to work together." To qualify, users of illegitimate versions of Windows XP Pro must pledge to use only genuine Microsoft software going forward and agree to have their software infrastructure audited. In the latest sign that Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) expects to support its Windows XP operating system for the foreseeable future, the company on Tuesday introduced a new licensing program designed to let users of fake or pirated copies of the business version of the OS upgrade to fully licensed copies. Under the plan, called Get Genuine Windows Agreement, software resellers can offer to their business customers a volume licensing contract that will allow them to replace fake or "mislicensed" copies of Windows XP Professional with legitimate versions. Microsoft is hedging its bets by keeping Windows XP on the market a little longer rather than shelving it in favor of the new Vista operating system.
The software giant said this week that XP would be available to retailers and PC manufacturers into next summer rather than retiring it in January as originally planned.
The move was a response to a slower-than-expected transition to Vista by Windows users. Information Week said Friday it ran a survey of businesses and found 30 percent had no plans to adopt Vista at all.
IDG News Service said other customers are waiting for a new Vista service pack to come out in the first quarter of 2008 before making the switch.

Microsoft is providing businesses with unlicensed software—and the partners supporting them—a new option to purchase Windows XP. Yeah, Windows XP. It would be so easy to dis Vista, particularly given last week's XP OEM licensing extension, but Microsoft's program makes sense. Windows XP is the right focus. The new program, GGWA (Get Genuine Windows Agreement), complements another, GGK (Get Genuine Kit), launched in summer 2006. Microsoft channel partners fulfill both programs, which provide businesses a way to get legal copies of Windows XP on PCs that shipped without operating systems or that are loaded with unlicensed software.
