Folsom High had it all going: revenge, a first-quarter advantage and a 29-game win streak. But Monte Vista countered with perhaps its best game of the season keyed by a 23-2 run in a 63-42 CIF NorCal Division I victory at St. Mary's College on Thursday night. As usual, senior point guard Brian Barbour led the way with 21 points, but Tyrelle Phillips, a 6-foot-3 senior, added 17 points and 11 rebounds and Zach Ertz and Taylor Brewster combined for 18. Monte Vista (28-3), the second seed, will play top-seeded McClymonds in Saturday's 8 p.m. final at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

Is your Xbox 360 worth $1 million? For a 21-year-old Yale student, the answer is yes. Jesse Maiman sued US Airways for $1 million after his tricked-out Xbox 360 console disappeared from his checked luggage, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Maiman packed the Xbox console--which he says includes a specialized hard drive worth $1,000--in his suitcase for a December 17 flight between New Haven and Cincinnati. At baggage claim in Cincinnati, however, the bag was there, but the console was nowhere to be found.

We still don't really know what the point is...? Windows creates software, sometimes exceptional, often times OK, and occasionally just because they wanted to; Live OneCare 2.0 falls into the last category. The software really doesn't include anything that is groundbreaking, no revolutionary advancements into anything, and overall seems like a fluff piece to lure Grandma's and Grandpa's who know little to nothing of computers into purchasing a $50 disc that will empty their recycling bin for them.

Judging from the test version that was widely downloaded by the public, shifting to Microsoft's Windows 7 promises to inflict much less pain than its predecessor, Vista. Some of the changes to Windows even make computing easier and more fun. We aren't alone in predicting that Windows 7 will be a popular upgrade when it hits the market later this year or early in 2010. Buyers will have to pay the usual Microsoft tax to upgrade an existing computer.

Sometimes an Xbox Live Arcade title comes out of nowhere, with no advanced notice, no first-look preview showings and no events to demonstrate it. In some cases, it’s a pleasant surprise, such as when Peggle was announced as coming this week. However, Peggle’s release counterpart this week, Square Enix’s Crystal Defenders, represents the other side of the coin. It hit XBLA this week with few details in advance, though its tie-in with the Final Fantasy series makes it an immediate buy for some gamers.

Even with MSXML 6.0 available, Microsoft remains committed to the evolution of MSXML 4.0. The Redmond company argued that the continuous development of MSXML version 4 is designed to support legacy applications that fail to play nice with v6.0. In this regard, the software giant released Service Pack 3 of MSXML 4.0 the past week. Still, despite the release of SP3 for MSXML4.0, the Redmond company is urging users to upgrade to version 6.0, the latest release of Microsoft XML Core Services.

According to Bloomberg’s earlier report on Microsoft’s desire to encourage users to upgrade to more expensive versions of Windows 7, operating system software accounts for 28 percent of the company’s $60.4 billion in annual revenue and is its most profitable business.
Collins Stewart analyst Sandeep Aggarwal projected that Microsoft could rake in as much as $1.5 billion in additional revenue from the release of Windows 7. ZDNet reported that, of that $1.5 billion, nearly two-thirds of it will come from upgrades--which we assume means licenses from owners of Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Remote access applications that let you view the files on your hard drive from a mobile phone are terrific productivity tools, but one thing makes the pre-release of Copernic Mobile is possibly the best--search. Rivals do an equally exemplary job of indexing the range of docs and multimedia, but this app lets you search for the documents, photos, and files stored on Vista or XP instead of browse through a file tree.
